Dentures are a great way to replace missing teeth. They are affordable and can be made relatively quickly. Since they can be removed, it is easy to clean and care for them. However, dentures do represent a change in your life, and it will take a little time to get used to wearing them. Although many people make think that dentures are just for those aged 55 and older, many younger adults wear dentures, or could benefit from them.

It may take a while to get used to having your dentures in, and your dentist may suggest leaving them in for an extended period of time when you first get them. They may feel bulky until you get comfortable wearing them, but if there is persistent pain or pressure, you should contact your dentist to have them adjusted. You may need to have your dentures lined, and the dentist may have already scheduled that appointment with you.

Eating may be a challenge for the first few weeks. You might find it helpful to cut your food into smaller pieces for a while, or you might want to cut some food into long strips and chew it on both sides of your mouth. You may find it helpful to bite with your “eye teeth”, which are located behind your incisors in your smile. Doing so may keep your dentures from ‘floating”, or moving in your mouth.

You may find it difficult to pronounce some words while wearing your new dentures. If that is the case, you can practice pronouncing them or try to speak them slower. Even though your dentures are not natural teeth, they still need to be cleaned every day, and you should follow your dentist’s instructions about how to care for them.

If you are thinking about getting dentures or considering another tooth-restoration option, you can make an appointment to see Dr. Sam Cigno at Bellefontaine Family Dental in St. Louis, Missouri, by calling 314-741-5133.
