It’s time for New Year’s Resolutions! Might we suggest one that doesn’t have to be forgotten by Valentine’s Day: taking better care of your smile! Here are a few things to consider as you evaluate your basic oral hygiene habits.

The Right Brush: Choose a soft-bristled brush that reaches all areas of your mouth, and look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance to ensure you are getting the best product. Replace your toothbrush quarterly. Replace it sooner if it appears frayed or worn.

Proper Technique: Place the toothbrush at a 45* angle to your gums. Make gentle, short, back-and-forth strokes. To clean the inner surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush at a steep vertical angle into the mouth, with multiple up-and-down strokes. Remember, use a soft touch! Brushing too hard can damage your tooth enamel, your gum tissue, and even your toothbrush.

2×2: Brush for two minutes, twice a day. If you are just getting back into the habit this year, try playing a favorite song or setting a timer to make sure you reach a full two minutes. The habit gets easier with consistency, so don’t quit! The payoff is huge!

Remember, proper brushing is a lifelong healthy habit. For more tips on preventative oral hygiene techniques, contact  Bellefontaine Family Dental in St. Louis, Missouri at 314-741-5133. Dr. Sam Cigno, Dr. Al-Kassab, and our team look forward to hearing from you.
